Regional Medical Officer of Health, Western Zone
Dr. Rim Zayed was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, and earned her medical degree from Alexandria University. Her residencies in Family Medicine and Community Medicine were completed at the High Institute of Public Health in Alexandria.
After moving to Canada, Rim completed a residency in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the University of Ottawa. She also holds a PhD in genetic epidemiology, with a focus on newborn screening for congenital hypothyroidism. She continues to maintain a strong academic and research focus.
Rim practiced medicine for over 15 years in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and as a research doctoral fellow in England. During that time, she helped establish a national newborn screening program and Maternal Child Health initiative. She has been serving in Canada since 2013, and joined the Nova Scotia Health Public Health team in March 2024.
Rim brings expertise in addressing complex health issues, especially in rural areas and in collaboration with Indigenous communities. She is committed to improving public health outcomes in Nova Scotia’s western zone and working with colleagues across the province to build healthier communities.
Rim lives in Lunenburg with her affectionate American Shorthair cow cat, Momo. She has a daughter in Montreal and a son in Ottawa, who lives with his partner and their two cherished dogs and cat.
