Dr. Jesse Kancir, MD FRCPC CCFP, received his medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed Family Medicine and Public Health & Preventive Medicine residencies at the University of British Columbia. Jesse also holds graduate degrees in Health Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Public Policy from the University of Cambridge.
In his career, Jesse has practiced public health medicine in British Columbia, Yukon, and Nova Scotia, as well as providing locum support for Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition to public health, he has also worked for the Federal Minister of Health on files related to medical assistance in dying and Canada’s response to Zika virus, among others. In 2021, he became Regional Medical Officer of Health in Nova Scotia’s Eastern Zone, where he served until winter 2025.
Jesse now serves as of Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Department of Health and Wellness. He is also actively engaged with medical organizations, including serving on committees with Doctors Nova Scotia, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
