Dr. Harold Berghuis

Dr. Harold Berghuis is the Head of Family Medicine Department in Northern Zone. 

He promotes to improve family practice in rural Nova Scotia because improving the lives of physicians will improve the lives of patients. 

Dr. Berghuis was born in Williamsburg, Ontario but his father is originally Dutch, and his mother is from Netherland. His family moved to Newfoundland and Labrador where he was raised. He moved to Nova Scotia in Truro for better job opportunities as a family practitioner even though everyone was leaving to United States. 

Dr. Berghuis did 2 years in Land Surveying program at Nova Scotia Community College, worked with Newfoundland Hydro transmission lines for 2 years, then completed Mechanical, Chemical and Nuclear Engineering all at once at University of New Brunswick. In 1985, he decided to do Medical School and completed Residency in Family Practice. 

He enjoys sailing, golfing, biking, and swimming. He also likes building and fixing things whether it’s carpentry, electrical or machinery.
