Dr. Edward Hewins

Surgery
He/Him

Dr. Edward Hewins was born in Bridgewater, NS. His father was a Mountie, so the family moved across Canada, with stays in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. Dr. Hewins completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Alberta, graduating from Medical School in 1989, after which time he moved to Halifax to complete a rotating internship and first year of Internal Medicine at Dalhousie University.

Dr. Hewins began his career in Family Medicine. In 1999, he was accepted into a re-entry program at Dalhousie in Orthopaedic Surgery and completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency training in 2004.

He currently holds more than 20 years of practice as a staff Orthopaedic Surgeon at Valley Regional and assumed the role of Department Head of Surgery for the Western Zone of Nova Scotia in December of 2023.

In addition to Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Hewins is also interested in Lifestyle Medicine and its role in addressing chronic illnesses, including heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and cancer. He joined the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and serves as a diplomate of The American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. He incorporates Lifestyle medicine into his surgical practice and will continue to work toward incorporating it as a core principle in his teaching and clinical programs as part of the ‘transformation’ of our Health Care System.
