Dr. Lesya Shuba Appointed Interim Head, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences

On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine, Nova Scotia Health, and IWK Health, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lesya Shuba as Interim Head, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, effective August 1, 2023 – July 31, 2024.

Dr. Shuba, a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, was trained at the Medical Institute in her native Kyiv, Ukraine before coming to Halifax in 1992. She earned a PhD degree in cardiac electrophysiology in 1996 and went on to complete her medical degree and ophthalmology residency, all at Dalhousie University. In 2006 she completed a Glaucoma Fellowship at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA, before joining the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Dalhousie. Her clinical practice focuses mainly on the management of advanced and complex glaucoma and cataract surgery.

Over the years, Dr. Shuba has been actively engaged in medical education. Between 2014 and 2019 she was the Residency Program Director in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, where she is currently the Director of the Clinical Glaucoma Fellowship. She has provided continuing professional medical education to ophthalmologists in Atlantic Canada, nationally, and internationally, and has been chair and co-chair of various planning committees for regional and national meetings.
Dr. Shuba is involved in both basic science and clinical research and has been the recipient of several research grants. She has presented her work at both national and international conferences and has been published in over 60 peer-reviewed papers.

In February 2022, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Dr. Shuba co-founded “Eyes on Ukraine,” a group of Canadian Ophthalmologists affiliated with the Canadian Ophthalmological Society providing Ukrainian ophthalmologists educational support, funding, and ophthalmic medications and equipment. The initiative was recognized by the American Academy of Ophthalmology Secretary for Global Alliances and awarded an American Academy of Ophthalmology Secretariat Award.

In announcing Dr. Shuba’s appointment, we would like to recognize Dr. Marcelo Nicolela, who has just completed his second and final term as department head. We thank him for his many years of dedicated service to the department and Faculty of Medicine and wish him luck as he returns to focus on his research and clinical practice.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Shuba on her appointment.
