Dalhousie University Department of Psychiatry Announces New Section Heads

Section of Acute Consultation and Emergency Psychiatry

Dr. Sanjana Sridharan has been appointed Head, Section of Acute, Consultation and Emergency Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University and NS Health Central Zone for a 5-year term effective April 1 2022. In this role, Dr. Sridharan will be responsible for physician strategic and operational planning and management of acute, consultation liaison and emergency psychiatric services in effective collaboration with her operational co-leader and physician teams. In addition to having clinical oversight responsibilities for her section with her co-leaders, Dr. Sridharan will have oversight of educational and research programming within the section in effective collaboration with the Department’s education and research leaders.

Dr. Sridharan has also been appointed Vice Chair, Central Zone Chief’s Clinical Council. In this additional role, she will act as the Central Zone Clinical Chief of Psychiatry in the absence of the Clinical Chief for Psychiatry. She will also oversee the Department of Psychiatry on-call program/schedule and other assigned pan-departmental clinical programs.

Dr. Sridharan is presently the Deputy Director of Acute Care and an Inpatient Psychiatrist at the AJLB, positions she has held since she joined the department in 2017. In her role as Head of Acute, Consultation and Emergency, Dr. Sridharan is most excited about being a part of the vision for the Department, in keeping with the updated strategic plan. She is especially interested in the new initiatives planned for implementation, including the home-based treatment program, day hospital, psychiatry consultation and mental health stabilization program and transcultural mental health program. She is eager to embrace and lead these changes with her esteemed colleagues.

Section of Community Psychiatry

Dr. Rami Rudnick has been appointed Head, Section of Community Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University for 5-year term, effective April 1, 2022. In this role, Dr. Rudnick will be responsible for physician strategic and operational planning and management of adult community mental health services in effective collaboration with his operational co-leader and physician teams. In addition to having clinical oversight responsibilities for his section with his co-leaders, Dr. Rudnick will have oversight of educational and research programming within the section in effective collaboration with the Department’s education and research leaders.

Dr. Rudnick is presently a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, he is also cross appointed in the Faculty of Health. Additionally, Dr. Rudnick holds other positions within the Faculty of Medicine such as, Vice Chair of the Research Advisory Committee and Director of Research in Medicine. Dr. Rudnick joined the department in 2018 and has made valuable contributions to the department and province. He is currently the clinical director of the Nova Scotia Operational Stress Injury Clinic which is part of the Nova Scotia Health Authority and provides services to Prince Edward Island. He is also the medical humanities coordinator of the Department of Psychiatry, for which he received the Educator of the Year award.

In his role as Head for Community Psychiatry, Dr. Rudnick aims to leverage the strengths of the Section of Community Psychiatry as it exists, not just in Nova Scotia but throughout the Maritimes. He plans to address opportunities for improvement, strategically and operationally, using a visioning process with a staged plan and related implementation and evaluation.

Section of Forensic Psychiatry

Dr. Risk Kronfli has been appointed Head, Section of Forensic Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University and NS Health for a 5-year term, effective April 1, 2022. In this role, Dr. Kronfli will be responsible for physician strategic and operational planning in effective collaboration with his operational co-leaders and physician team. He will also provide input into the development of research and education policies and practices as they relate to the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University’s academic mandate.

Dr. Kronfli is presently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University. He joined the department in 1994 as a resident, and since then, has made valuable contributions to the department and the province. He’s currently the Interim Clinical Director and prior to that, he was the Psychiatrist in Chief for the Mentally Ill Offender Unit and Correction Mental Health.

In his role as Head of Section of Forensic Psychiatry, Dr. Kronfli is confident that he will make the best decisions and provide the leadership capabilities necessary to assemble teams to ensure that Nova Scotia has the best forensic mental health service in Canada. He envisions harboring and modelling consistency and predictability while securing clinical and academic opportunities that will be in the best interest of the department, including overseeing the development of a forensic training fellowship.

Section of Geriatric Psychiatry

Dr. Mark Bosma has been appointed Head, Section of Geriatric Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University for a 5-year term effective July 1, 2022. In this role, Dr. Bosma will be responsible for physician strategic and operational planning in effective collaboration with their operational co-leaders and physician teams. He will provide input into the development of policies and processes as it relates to geriatric psychiatric services in the community, and in hospital in-patient settings. He will also provide input into the development of research and education policies and practices as they relate to the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University’s academic mandate.

Dr. Bosma joined the department in 2007 as an Assistant Professor and has been a member of the geriatric psychiatry team since then. He has also had roles in education leadership positions for the past decade, with the last 8 years spent as Director of Postgraduate Education. More recently, Dr. Bosma was appointed Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Lead, a position he will assume, effective July 1, 2022.

In this role, Dr. Bosma hopes to use his strong communication skills, ability to build relationships with strategic education partners, problem solving skills and his adaptability to ensure the ongoing success and the evolution of the section of geriatric psychiatry. Given his prior leadership roles, experiential understanding of the geriatric psychiatry section, and demonstrated ability to foster and maintain workplace relationships, Dr. Bosma is confident that he will effectively due his duties as the section head.
