We are pleased to share that Dr. Janet Sommers has accepted the role of Medical Director, Virtual Urgent Care and Virtual Emergency Care. Dr. Sommers will provide clinical oversight on the test and try, spread, and scale of these innovative projects. As we continue to transform and modernize healthcare in Nova Scotia, we are confident that her leadership will not only improve access to care, but support our continued efforts to ensure that patients are receiving the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
Dr. Sommers is an emergency physician and the Site Specialty Lead in emergency medicine at Colchester East Hants Health Centre. She is also the Northern Zone Emergency Department head.
Dr. Sommers is a graduate of Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine (2005) and completed her family medicine training at Dalhousie’s Northumberland Site (2007) and returned to Halifax for an additional year of training in emergency medicine.
She has worked in the virtual care space as a clinician and innovator since 2020. Her professional interests include quality improvement, clinical teaching, mentoring wellness in medicine, leveraging technology and innovation to improve access to health care, and deepening her knowledge and practice of emergency medicine.
Dr. Sommers is married to Dr. Ryan Sommers (Dalhousie University, 2006) and together they have four children.
Dr. Sommers will be part of the Virtual Care Leadership team, alongside Dr. Emmanuel Ajuwon, Senior Medical Director, Virtual Care.
