We pleased to announce Dr. Simon Field has been appointed Head for the Central Zone Department of Emergency Medicine, effective August 1, 2024.
Dr. Field was born in South Africa and after completing mandatory military service and working as a paramedic, received his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1992. After further training in South Africa and the UK, he relocated to Canada in 1995, where he worked as a rural family physician in Saskatchewan for four years and obtained his CCFP designation. In 1999, Simon changed his focus to full-time Emergency Medicine and moved to Regina, where he completed his CCFP(EM) qualification prior to moving east to join Dalhousie University in 2003.
Dr. Field practiced as an emergency physician at the QEII Health Sciences Centre and IWK Health Centre, and additionally served as clerkship director for Emergency Medicine while completing his M.Ed. in Curriculum Studies at Acadia University in 2011. In 2012 he was appointed as the first Assistant Dean for Clerkship in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University.
Dr. Field practices at the Charles V. Keating Emergency Centre at the Halifax Infirmary and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Dalhousie University. He continues to engage in both clinical and educational research. He has interests in assessment, distributed and longitudinal education, and in a broad range of clinical topics including patient safety, critical thinking, and resource utilization. He publishes and presents regularly, both nationally and internationally, in numerous areas related to Medical Education and Emergency Medicine.
