Prevention and Management of Acute Exacerbation of COPD

Nova Scotia Health and Doctors Nova Scotia are pleased to announce the launch of the Quality Improvement (QI) Rounds by physicians for physicians. The topics for the upcoming seminars will include:

  • Sepsis
  • Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Heart Failure
  • Pneumonia
  • Levels of Intervention
  • Urinary Tract Infection

The sessions are targeted towards all physicians who provide inpatient and Emergency Department care. Each session will run for an hour followed by 30 minutes of questions and discussion. All sessions will be recorded and available for download on the Doctors Nova Scotia portal.

Prevention and Management of Acute Exacerbation of COPD

Dr. Paul Hernandez, Respirologist, will provide a presentation about Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Outcomes of the presentation include:

  • Understand the consequences of AECOPD to the individual patient and society.
  • Be aware of the evidence supporting management recommendations for AECOPD.
  • Implement strategies to prevent AECOPD.

About the Presenter 

Dr. Paul Hernandez is a Respirologist and Head/Chief, Division of Respirology (Central Zone, Nova Scotia Health), Medical Director of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program and Medical Co-lead of the 3-Intermediate Care Unit at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. He is a Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Dr. Hernandez is past president of the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS), past chair of the Adult Respirology Examination Board of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and past chair of the CTS COPD Clinical Assembly.

Prior to moving back to Halifax, he completed medical school and post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Respirology at McGill University. His main clinical and research areas of interest are COPD, asthma, pulmonary rehabilitation, and pulmonary hypertension.

This one-credit-per-hour Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Continuing Professional Development Office of Dalhousie University for up to 1.5 Mainpro+ credits.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Continuing Professional Development, Dalhousie University. You may claim a maximum of 1.5 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

Through an agreement between the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert Royal College MOC credits to AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
