The Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine has developed a program in academic leadership for clinical and basic science faculty, Emerging Leaders in Academic Medicine (ELAM). The program provides an opportunity for faculty with limited leadership experience to become more familiar with the functioning of the medical school and acquire knowledge and skills to take on expanded roles in their academic settings.
Description: The program comprises 8 Units offered in a distributed format, making it equally accessible to faculty located wherever internet is available. Independent study activities and moderated online discussions are delivered asynchronously on Dalhousie’s web-based Learning Management System (Brightspace). Introductory and concluding synchronous (live) sessions offered via MS Teams webinars. Optional networking meetings will be held annually for those who successfully complete the program.
Core Topics: Understanding Your Leadership Style; Goal Setting and Time Management; Collaboration, Collegiality and Productive Conflict; Serving on Committees and Chairing Meetings; Leadership of Academic /Team Projects; Leading in a Distributed Environment; Mentoring and Coaching. Plus, choose one of three possible Electives
Enrollment: Limited to 30 participants with spots reserved for DMNB and basic science departments. Participants must have a faculty appointment with Dalhousie Medical School. Time Commitment: Participants are expected to commit approximately 20 hours to this program, which features videos, readings, interactive modules, online discussion forums, and webinars. The program is administered by the Faculty Development Program, located within Dalhousie Continuing Professional Development & Medical Education in the Faculty of Medicine. It is educationally co-sponsored by Continuing Professional Development.
