The Behaviour Change Counselling Development Program (BCCDP)

The program runs from September 6th to November 29th, 2022.  Participation in ALL components of the program is required to receive 42 Mainpro+ credits.

The Behaviour Change Counselling Development Program (BCCDP) is offered by the Primary Health Care and Chronic Disease Management Network, Nova Scotia Health and provides education, training and support for family physicians and Nurse Practitioners who are interested in supporting patients to effectively activate and sustain health behaviour changes to improve health outcomes. 

The program uses a quality-improvement approach and includes 3 main components that span over a 12-week period. These include: 8 self-directed e-modules, 3 self-directed action periods where new learnings are integrated into practice, 3 - 2-hour interactive virtual workshop-style sessions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply motivational communication strategies (ask, listen, summarize, invite) into daily practice. 
  2. Integrate a non-judgemental stance into clinical interactions.
  3. Integrate the skill of how to identify, avoid and respond effectively to a motivational argument into clinical interactions.
  4. Engage, partner, and share responsibility with patient in the identification and assessment of readiness using a traffic light metaphor. 
  5. Partner with patient to introduce behaviour modification through the introduction of goal setting using an ideas-into-action tool. 
  6. Partner with patient to introduce the concepts of goal shaping, stimulus control and reinforcement management through the integration of motivational communication skills when appropriate.
  7. Integrate motivational communication skills into the introduction of a distress and wellbeing assessment when appropriate.
  8. Integrate motivational communication skills to introduce and explore the 4S’s
  9. Integrate motivational communication skills to introduce and explore the concept of replacing the function.
  10. Integrate motivational communication skills to introduce stress management strategies as a tool to address emotion management.
  11. Integrate BCCDP tools and resources into an effective workflow.

Nova Scotia Health is pleased to offer the program in the Fall 2022, led by Facilitators and Physicians working in Nova Scotia.

Block 1

  • September 6th - October 4th, 2022

  • October 5th - November 1st, 2022

  • November 2nd - November 29th, 2022

 

Asynchronous work (4-5 hours):

  • E-modules 1-4 completed
  • Development and implementation of personal action plan

 

Asynchronous work (2-3 hours):

  • E-modules 5-6 completed
  • Development and implementation of personal action plan

 

Asynchronous work (2-3 hours):

  • E-modules 7-8 completed
  • Development and implementation of personal action plan

 All learning sessions will be held virtually via Zoom and run from 6:30-8:30 pm.
